I strongly believe one of the often undocumented, unappreciated, and undervalued component to Botswana’s so-called ’’Africa’s success story’’ is in the mighty name of the “Eastern European Educated” Dr Goabamang Kenneth Koma – founder of the Botswana National Front. It is universally acknowledged that any Government without meaningful Opposition is dangerous: to both its citizens and itself. Of course, collectively, the Botswana Opposition has been ideal for any ruling party, as they have provided limited political contestation. Having said that, Dr Koma – particularly in the 1994 General Elections – commendably, shook the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP). I wonder whether his often talked about relationship with BDP strengthened post-1994? Some of his Comrades say The Great Koma long ’’changed’’ a decade earlier: after he had relocated to Gaborone as an MP (Mmegi.bw).
“Under his leadership the BNF advocated beneficiation of diamonds, to add more value to our mineral exports and thereby augment our export revenues, develop a broader industrial base, create employment and transfer skills to Batswana” (sundaystandard.info). Therefore, it could be argued that, inter alia, Dr Koma is one of the pioneering facilitators – directly and indirectly – of the 2012 De Beers Global Sightholder Sales relocation from London to Gaborone.
