Settler Colonialism vs Surrogate Colonialism: In countries such as South Africa and Namibia, it is very common to find the same or similar structures as in countries such as England and Germany: also known as colonial architecture. To the extent of the same street names and town names.
Indeed, countries such as Botswana “greatly missed out” on these great buildings. The most notable structure – in Botswana – I can think of is the Railway line that the settlers mainly used to connect the Cape Colony with Rhodesia (modern Zimbabwe). Of course, the marvellous buildings came at a “great cost” to the natives.
I was at the breathtaking Westminster Abbey just yesterday. Admiring the beautiful and significant UNESCO World Heritage Site. During the praying, singing and preaching I was reminded of the similar great structures (and the lack of) in South Africa, Namibia, and Botswana.
