“You love it here?!”
4 March 2016
In my almost 9 years here, most people seem to relate to me in very limited capacities: “are you cold?” “I love your name!,” “It must be hard in Africa!” “You love it here!” “where are you originally from?” “It’s very bad with the Ebola – would you ever go back?”
I have come to observe that these questions are rather rhetorical. I have learned to always make sure I also question the interrogator’s identity. I have observed that most are taken back by my questions: where are you from? Which part of Scotland? How big is it the area? Sounds interesting, I should visit the place one day.
Sometimes, if I am not in the mood for asking, I talk about home, my family, and my aspirations. Most of the time their energy levels decline significantly from their loudly authoritative smiling opening statement: ‘‘how long have you been in the UK for Blessing?”
I thought, surely, I’m more than a one-line statement.
