The Singer Sewing Machine

Mama le Papa owned a couple, with a table. At some point employing 3 if not 4 experienced women.

Before the mobile phones, when I was a little boy, a significant number of people, within the village, would come home, at any given time. They would come home to patch their trousers, to alter their dresses, and to design and order their curtains. What I loved most were the expressions of the often joyous clients: “borokgwe jwa me bo thubegile kana!” “Mosese mma o motona!” “Ke batla di-curtain tsa pattern yame fela!”

As soon as they had left, my brother and I always mimicked them.

I come from a family of very talented Baroki and Basigi.
