I met Lucky,
Today I met up with Lucky, by chance
It was perhaps after a couple of bites of the mokwetjepe and madombi. I was facing the Matsaakgang football pitch when I saw him approaching. Immediately, the lady who had served me went on to prepare some food for Lucky.
Lucky sat right next to me and enjoyed his lunch, instead of the madombi, Lucky had the mokwetjepe with phaleche.
I told Gabo, the place owner, his friend (I went to the same high school with) and the lady selling the food how Lucky was very gifted in art.
I vividly remember Lucky’s drawings from my class.
I did not tell them of the number of fights I had with Lucky (Lucky won);
I did not tell them that Lucky came to school barefooted;
I did not tell them how we made fun of Lucky in class;
As soon as Lucky finished his food he left. I wonder whether he remembers me. I did say his name and surname, and he repeated my words. As soon as Lucky left I ran after him. There were lots of words I wanted to share with Lucky. I asked him where his brother Remi is. As soon as I mentioned Remi Lucky’s face lit up: “Remi o teng, Remi o teng.”
At that moment perhaps to mend my guilt, and also to share something with Lucky, I gave him P50 and told him to get himself a drink.
I think the last time I spent that much time with Lucky was in 1993, in our Standard 6 class.
I hope to meet Lucky again, not only Lucky but also his brother Remi and their family.
Thank you Lucky!
