“I bleed red, so do you!” The Loch Long Hotel diner complimentarily reassured me that after-all I am human, just like him – the standard bearer. This was in 2007 – 7 days or less into my racial identity intensive lesson.
About a year later, I was going home, where I would later narrate (of course biased) all the shocking ignorant racial encounters I experienced.
Because of the weather, my Flybe flight was delayed for almost 3 hours – from Glasgow to Heathrow. Consequently, I missed my Virgin Airways flight to Johannesburg. Unfortunately, I slept at the very busy Heathrow airport – it must have been on a Costa Coffee couch. Just when I was coming from the toilets; I was almost ‘shot’ by 2 white heavily amoured police as they rudely accused me of fitting the profile of a ladies toilet stalker! Yes. They made me look into some camera for verification! Before making me feel very lucky and fortunate not to have been arrested.
Of course, I never complained. However, I got a valuable lesson, in fact a very invaluable lesson. I sincerely thank the two white gentlemen.
