Finding myself

My very last #throwback of 2017, fittingly my last post of 2017, has to go to, a (very privileged I must add), special moment I had in Gasita village when I interviewed a young man of 19 years. Concluding the half hour interrogation I asked:

So, what’s your favourite team?

Him: “You mean football? There is a team here in Gasita by the name of Clever Boys. We always play with the likes of Dikwankwetla and Juventus. Sometimes, we play other teams from Lerolwana and as far as Kanye.”

Very satisfied, I smiled, and remembered that me too, my favourite team “was” Kanye Swallows. The team that used to play teams such as Maletamotse and Southern Pirates. Sometimes, we would play teams from Jwaneng and as far as Gaborone.

Perhaps, this was way more than “fieldwork”. This was my homecoming, this was I, learning my Botswana, finding my Botswana, my Africa, yes, finding myself.
