“Haaloo, erra, owaiii, fax ga e bereke, ke ne ke tle ke e ko Matsaakgang (Primary School) go dirisa ya bone jaanong le ya bone ga e bereke.”
“Hello, yes sir, ahh the fax machine is not working. I used to use the one at the nearby Matsaakgang Primary School but it’s also not working.”
Stated the tall and slender Mr Lore, the Mafhikana Primary School Head, over the black landline phone inside the neatly organised office – on a hot, bright Monday morning.
Following the brief phone call, we firmly shook hands, and I introduced myself. About 15 minutes later our unscheduled meeting was over. The smartly dressed Mr Lore, wholeheartedly, welcomed the prospect of a Mafhikana Primary Alumni Society that primarily intends to work with the school in motivating, supporting and celebrating the growing talent of girls and boys there: the future leaders of Botswana.
We do not intend to finish at Mafhikana, the intention is to make it trendy. We want it to spread nationwide. We want every single school in Botswana to have an Alumni Society: Primary, Junior Secondary, as well as Senior Secondary! It’s going to be a mammoth task! But it’s worth reminding ourselves that our dear mothers, grandmothers, and aunties had to pound sorghum grains everyday in order to make porridge. Our fathers, grandfathers, and uncles dug gold deep underground just to survive. Therefore, this is nothing, relative to what they had to endure. They paved the way for us: to stress over Alumni societies! The perfect stress, I believe.
This is their legacy!
