Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park

The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is a large wildlife reserve located in the heart of the Kalahari Desert of southern Africa. It is composed of two adjoining parks: the Gemsbok National Park in Botswana and the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park in South Africa, bordering Namibia. The park can be accessed through five gates in the three different countries (SANParks 2010 in Dikgang and Muchapondwa 2013).

On 12 May 2000, Presidents Festus Mogae of Botswana and Thabo Mbeki of South Africa formally launched the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park as a single ecological unit, allowing widlife to move freely between the two countries.

According to Botswana Tourism, it is Africa’s first peace park.

“The total area of the park is 38,000 sq kms. Approximately three-quaters of the park lies in Botswana and one-quarter in South Africa.”
