It’s hard to imagine street food in Botswana without mangwinya, or fat cakes. At Mabogo Dinku, a semausu located in the Kgatleng area in Kanye, opposite the BG bar, there was popular mangwinya affectionately known as “satellite”, alluding to the unusually flat shape of the fried bread. Usually, mangwinya are shaped in round balls.
In the mid to late 90s, in the village of Kanye, satellite dishes began mushrooming on roofs of most houses. Consequently, the word “satellite” became common in daily conversations. And an unknown person, perhaps even in mockery, named the best mangwinya to ever come out of Kanye.
Recently, my favourite Scotland team, Rangers, won the Scottish Premiership League for the first time in 10 years. I was acutely reminded of the ElSat satellite dish that enabled me to follow Paul Gascoigne-led Rangers in the late 90s, and, of course, while eating the delicious satellites.
Had you told me I was gonna live in Scotland one day I’d have laughed hard at you!
Maybe England, or US.
Scotland? where’s that?
