My mother’s “brain freeze” moment

September 2015, Kanye

One of the best moments in my life was seeing the ‘’brain freeze’’ facial expressions my mother made when she was enjoying the Chocolate and Mint ice cream I had bought, with my hard earned money as a Customer Service Assistant. For a moment, I wondered whether roles were reversed? Will they ever be?

As I watched her hesitantly enjoying the frozen desert, I wanted to get inside her thoughts: to see her worries about me, we had talked earlier about my recent graduation. She kept reminding me that she wants a photo of me in the gown for herself. I had hinted to her that I want to further my studies, which baffled her, to this day.

Sometimes I wonder: whether she has ever imagined her child “in exile” in the UK for 10 years? However, as Dr Mulale brilliantly puts it: ” to the parents who release their children to go: from your heart break comes our heart make. We never forget you, no matter how far we are, how long we’re away, or who we meet. In finding ourselves, we find you too. In growing into ourselves, we grow into you too. Your release of us is a gift. We’re nervous for you, as you are nervous for us, even when it doesn’t seem like it. We want you to always be there, because no matter where we are in the world, it’s in your heart we know without doubt that we belong”.

It was at that moment, perhaps, that I realised, the roles will never be reversed. She will always be nervous for her children, for me; however, my turn has finally come, to be nervous for my mother’s ‘’brain freezing’’ bowl of ice cream.
