I’m here reflecting on my recent visit in Botswana, home. I had a great time, to quote James Baldwin, I reconnected with the life that had produced me. I was with my people, what was also interesting was I was “regarded” as an elite, perhaps by most in Botswana. It seems such are the dynamics of poverty. Do I enjoy the “attention”? Of course I do.
It gets very interesting now that I am back to the United Kingdom. Where most regard me, perhaps as the complete opposite of an elite. But why? It seems such are the dynamics of racism.. I think. Do I enjoy the disrespectfulness? Of course I do.
Anyway, I enjoyed my time with these two: My nephew Rafiwa and niece Rethabile. My younger brother Nkgotla’s children. The very first grandchildren in the house of the late Lekgoanyana Kgasa, our father. We played together, I shot countless photos and videos of these two, I fed them porridge and we made jokes together.
This is the new Botswana. The Botswana that demand I step up and be a loving, responsible and inspirational uncle.
I will attempt to do my best Rafi le Rita.
