My brother, Nkgotla’s full name is: Kebonyekgotla. When I was home, indeed I saw my kgotla. Literally speaking.
It is interesting, perhaps sad, that when they celebrate me, they choose, rather they have been indoctrinated not to mention this place.
Please, do me a favour, when you want to praise me, don’t do it in parts, do not dare associate my being only to modernity, for that is only a small part of who I am.
I am from kgotla ya Goora Kgasa (Kgasa ward). In here live the descendants of Seohela, son of the Great Kgasa. As it’s a norm in a traditional Setswana village setup the Kgasa descendants have formed a circle around this kraal, my parents’ home is indeed part of this circle. Through word of mouth, as well as their deeds, it was at this kgotla (the front of this cattle kraal) where my late grandfather, my late father and my late father and grandfather’s cousins guided us: me and my brother as well as other male cousins such as Teiman and Mmeikho. It is fair to say, other than my parents’ home, these wooden poles are where my philosophical foundation is embedded.
Kgotla e ke nna!
This kgotla is me!
