A Letter to Bakers Ltd

RE: The Mafhikana Primary School Bakers Ltd Signage

Dear Sir/Madam,

We are writing with respect to the Mafhikana Primary School quasi-signboard just outside the school along the main road. While we were very pleased to learn that Bakers Ltd South Africa in Botswana has ’’adopted’’ our former primary school, a special place that we hold dear in our hearts: where for 7 years we were lovingly nurtured by patient teachers, we were greatly disappointed to see the explicitly Bakers self-promoting board. We came to this conclusion based on the Bakers Ltd logo, the Bakers red, white and black colours, and 3 packets of Bakers biscuits: Eet-Sum-Mor, Tennis, and Blue Label Marie. However, there was nothing else communicated on the signboard other than the school name, we argue.

It is critically important that we take into consideration that things that we see and hear in our environment strongly affect and influence our choices.  This is particularly the case for children whose experiences are limited to their surroundings and more importantly; they can’t always be critical to what they are exposed to compared to adults. Therefore, the school settings, the physical condition in this case, where children spend a vast amount of time, provide a fertile ground for their learning and ultimately have a significant impact to their learning experience.

it is primarily for this reason that we please ask for a concrete manifestation of Bakers Social Responsible Marketing:

1. The immediate removal of the signboard;

2. And may we also kindly recommend that the current signboard is replaced with an educationally, visually engaging board that will positively motivate and encourage the imagination, creativity, and thinking of our children, nieces, and nephews. Who are, indeed, the future leaders of not only the Ward of Mafhikana but also the Republic of Botswana.

We thank you for your cooperation.

Kind Regards
