We are Beef Addicts in Botswana

8 June 2017: The first morning following my homecoming, I got up around 06:00, dressed up and without even brushing my teeth, walked through the back gate and passed the Mafhikana Clinic, continued marching up in the cold until I reached Tlhomo CJSS. I know the route like the back of my hand: intimately well.

19 February 2018: The first morning following my homecoming, I got up around 07:00, dressed up and without even brushing my teeth, walked towards the back gate only to find that it was chain locked. I couldn’t be bothered to look for the keys and decided to instead use the front gate, as soon as I left home, I made an immediate left turn, followed by another left turn about 5 steps later. I waited couple of seconds for one gentleman to pass before going through the passage, sandwitched between my parents yard and Blocks ‘yard. Blocks’ parents’ yard is directly opposite my parents yard. His grandfather and my great grandfather were brothers: Sons of Seohela; the Great Kgasa beget Seohela.

Similarly to the previous year, I passed the Mafhikana Clinic, continued marching up in the heat untill I reached Tlhomo CJSS. The place where I was a naughty pupil between 1995 and 1996.

As I approached Tlhomo Community Junior Secondary School, I was welcomed home by the melodious bell of the grazing cattle.

While the backbone of Botswana economy is gem quality diamonds, at independence, drought prone agriculture (especially cattle rearing) and remittances from migrant miners in neighbouring South Africa were the main important sectors, constituting 47% of GDP. And currently agriculture accouts for only about 2% and diamonds about 28% of GDP.

It’s worth mentioning that most Batswana , such as myself, are beef addicts, and urgently need help.
